The Reeds of Avalon

The Reeds of Avalon :::

The reeds rustle in the wind. An other-wordly harmony emanates from the mists, embracing the breeze. Faery lights glimmer in the distance. The flutes whisper of an arrival. Beings of light emerge from the water, pushing aside tall grasses and standing on dry ground. In this filtered light, they become human.

We are mythic creatures. Our language is poetry, and our souls seek beauty and meaning as sustenance. Avalon is a sacred isle, surrounded by water and lined with sacred plant beings. This landscape is not in the past, but alive in our psyches as a place of magick and mystery that we bring to life with our conscious choices and actions. Avalon reminds us of a way of living in alignment with the elements; a way of life that is woven together with the natural world. Avalon is wild, primal, elemental-- humbly acknowledging our place in the wilderness, as an aspect of divine nature. It reminds us of who we came here to be. It holds the secrets of living our legend.

Our ancestors inherently embody this mytho-poetic way of being of the world. The Celts likened the moon this time of year leading up to Samhain and their new year, to the Reed, transitioning us from the season of Water to the season of the Earth. The edges where two elements meet are fertile places on our bodies and on the earth. The roots of the reeds are strong and deep, their stems long and hollow. They are humble wisdom keepers guarding the threshold between the manifest world and the spirit world. Their medicine offers protection when you travel into the waters of the spirit realms. They show us how to empty out and channel the divine, creating music as an offering back to life.

This year, as we emerge from the fertile swamplands onto dry land, we ask questions that will create our future. What shape are we evolving into as a species? What nourishment have we brought from the murky waters? What dream is ready to dry its bright wings and fly again?

Do not rush the poetry you are living. Samhain reminds us to linger and luxuriate in the mystery. Avalon reminds us to move in our own sweet timing, and the reeds whisper that music comes from the spaces in between the notes.
