Foundations of Magick: Samhain
Welcome to the Celtic New Year: Divination, Dreams, and Death.
“The world rests in the night. Trees, mountains, fields, and faces are released from the prison of shape and the burden of exposure. Each thing creeps back into its own nature within the shelter of the dark. Darkness is the ancient womb. Nighttime is womb- time. Our souls come out to play. The darkness absolves everything; the struggle for identity and impression falls away. We rest in the night.” -John O’Donohue
The Celts knew that all beginnings start in the darkness: the soil, the womb, the night. And the turning of the wheel comes from stillness. Samhain marks the completion of another turning of the wheel, and the start of a new motion. This is a time to go deep into the void. Get still, and listen.

Feel into the sacred pause.
“As nature takes her rest, our inner world of dreams and soul wakes up. The wildness within takes flight as our active lives come to rest. In pre-industrial times, there would have been very little to actually do and so the creative parts of ourselves would have the chance to storytell, craft, sing, dream, play music.”
Samhain is also a potent time for medicine making, and Elderberry Syrup is ideal to stock up on as we enter the season of cold and flus. The Autumn is the season that most affects the lungs in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Berries from the Elder Tree are powerful allies in supporting your lungs. We will connect more with the Elder Tree next month, so this recipe is also great to have on hand for what’s ahead.

Take a journey into the energies of Samhain.
Holly Hamilton guides us on a journey to Avalon to access the mystery of this time of deep magick and change. To prepare for this 20-minute meditation, sit or lie comfortably near your altar or in a private space outside. Bring a candle if possible, and have your pen and journal ready to record insights after.
Please remember to take time to respect and honor your ancestors, physical and spiritual at this time.
As always, you can find the specific moon sign for the new and full moon this month over on the moon audio page. Check your monthly email for details on the date, time, and specific sign.
